Woman with issue of blood receives relief, 12-year-old girl raised from death
Also, 2 blind men see again, mute man’s voice restored
A day full of miracles began for Jesus when one of the rulers of the local synagogue—Jairus—sought out the Lord and asked him to come heal his 12-year-old daughter. But before he reached the ruler’s house, a woman who had “a discharge of blood for 12 years” sought simply to get close enough to touch the fringe of his garment to receive healing, as Luke describes below:
Luke 8:42-48 [ESV]
42 … for [Jairus] had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.
45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
Jesus continued on to the ruler’s house where, according to Matthew, “flute players and the crowd” were making a commotion. Jesus told them, “‘Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.’ And they laughed at him.” Luke picks up the story:
51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
Matthew then describes what happened next:
Matthew 9:27-31 [ESV]
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men
27 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
His disciple Matthew tells about the immediate next miracle:
Matthew 9:32-34 [ESV]
Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak
32 As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.”
34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”
Four miraculous healings in a row, and the Pharisees attribute what Jesus did with operating in the power of the prince of demons.
Next time, Jesus heals an invalid of 38 years on the Sabbath, feeds 5,000 and heals their sick, then walks on water.
